The Night We Met

It was a Sunday in March and my sister and I attended a bridal shower. We were wearing appropriate afternoon attire. As I recall, I was wearing a light blue suit with a fitted jacket and short skirt. It was 1992 and I'm sure I still had "big hair". We were both unattached at the time. My last relationship ended some 8 months prior to that day. My sister insisted that I go home with her and accompany her to a singles club party that evening. Since I had to work the next day I was hesitant. She persisted saying it had been too long since I dated, and I had to jump back into the game, if I ever wanted to find someone.

I was apprehensive to attend a singles party because I had heard that the men were very forward. Being the shy, quiet type, I knew I would not fit in. When we arrived, we found two empty stools at a table not far from the bar. My sister left me there while she went to get us some drinks. I looked across the table and saw three people sitting there. A short thin man, a short blond woman, and Keith, a tall dark-haired man. I assumed that they came together, so I introduced myself to all three. When my sister returned with the drinks, she was immediately swept away to the dance floor by a friend.

Before too long, a man asked me to dance and I accepted. Then I realized that I had a large handbag with me. This was fine for the bridal shower, but not practical to carry on a dance floor. So I asked Keith, who was now alone, if he would watch my handbag. He agreed to do so and I went off. When I returned, he said "Gee, you don't carry much cash with you do you?" At first I was startled, then I realized he was teasing and I began to laugh. The two of us sat there talking for awhile and I learned that he was not with the other two people, he was alone. I then apologized for keeping him captive at the table guarding my bag.

My sister came back with a gentlemen who she introduced me to, and he asked if I would care to dance. Once again I turned to my new friend and he said, "Don't worry about the bag." When I returned, Keith was sitting on my stool. He turned to me and said, "It occurred to me that you might be hungry, so I grabbed a piece of cake for you. It's really good, try some." I opened my mouth and he gave me a forkful of the luscious cake. "Hm mm, that is good!"

Then he put the cake down and said, "I think it's time for us to dance." It was a slow dance and when we embraced, he said "Now, dosen't this feel good?" I looked up into his eyes and said, "Come to think of it, yes."

That is how it all began...embracing on the dance floor with my large handbag slung over Keith's shoulder. What could be more romantic? Twenty years together now, and it still feels good.

Marcy and Rochelle, thanks for commenting. Thought I'd answer this question as a Valentine to my husband, and not for the contest. (He giggled when he read it.) He dosen't need to carry my bag anymore, but he is still very thoughtful.
